Uber Self-Driving Car Involved in Fatal Crash

Last month (in March) a self-driving Uber car was involved in a fatal crash, resulting in the death of 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg. Despite having a human safety driver onboard, both the car and the driver failed to see the pedestrian, who was attempting to cross the road. Unfortunately, as we know, pedestrian auto injuries are common, however this particular accident is significant. This is because it involved a self-driving Uber car. Self-driving technology is predicted to be safer than human-driven cars, because machines are less likely to make ‘human errors’. But this fatality raises questions about self-driving technology. Are human-drivers safer than self-driving technology? Internal video footage showed that even the safety driver was unable to prevent the accident. Plus, it appears that the pedestrian was crossing in the dark where there was no crosswalk. This suggests that it would have been difficult for even the best of drivers to have spotted the pedestrian and to have stopped in time. In general, self-driving cars have driven for thousands of hours with almost no accidents. As a result, they are considered to be safer than human-drivers. And certainly, it looks like the future is heading in that direction, even if this particular fatality raises questions around the technology.
